When I’m at uni and have a lunch break I usually walk across the road to Mac centre to get some KFC. I like that fact that it’s cheap, quickly served, convenient to eat which is great because I’m always in a rush. Some other benefits are that it’s only a two minute walk to uni and the service is fast and I love my spicy chicken.
The downside is that it does get bland if I have it often and the various meal combos are just different combinations of the same types of chicken, amplify the blandness! I would like a change but really can’t be bothered because I don’t want to waste time trying out the alternatives at Mac centre. And I don’t want to be disappointed by bad food; I at least know what I am getting with KFC. Bland it may become, but fast food is fast food. It’s quick, filling and cheap. Looks like I won’t be changing my mind for a while.

Food for the cheapskate...
Pay over $10 for a meal? You have got to be kidding, right? Enter me, the proverbial cheapskate when it comes to buying food. There’s something in me that rises up against the thought of actually spending money on food when I can get some from home without paying anything. However, there are those days when the fridge is empty and there’s nothing available that is even remotely appetizing… the days when the thought of not eating for the next 8-9 hours is unbearable…those days where I grudgingly concede and buy myself some lunch. Even then, I have to confess to selecting my lunch on how much it costs, with around $5-7 being the preferred amount. Luckily, there are many ways to avoid spending unnecessary money. For example:
· Try avoiding the campus hub until around 2-2.30pm. The lunch rush will have ended and outlets will start to reduce prices.
· Don’t ever buy water. It’s a complete waste of money. Take your own water bottle from home and refill at the drinking fountains all over the university.
· Try downsizing! Smaller sizes are always cheaper.
I’ve found that the Thai Kiosk & the Sandwich Shop (located in the Campus Hub) are generally very reasonably priced…and yummy! There are lots of cheap, tasty options out there…so spend a bit of time looking around and keep your eyes open. There’s absolutely no need to spend ridiculous amounts of money on your lunch!

The beauty of food is that everyone loves it!
We are a group of Macquarie University students, who are definitely no exceptions to this rule! Our blog will be exploring the wide variety of food available on the campus at North Ryde. We hope to bring fresh, fun and informative viewpoints to this discussion, and provide other users of Macquarie University with handy tips and pointers on where to go and what to buy. The storyboard below (see image) provides a rough outline of what the layout of the blog will look like. We believe that, regardless of whether you’re living on a ‘student budget’ (aka…limited!) or whether you have money to burn, there are many exciting and taste-tingling options out there for you! So, no matter what you love to eat, we hope that you find this blog useful and that it inspires you to try something new!
